His Holiness Pope Francis has accepted the resignation of His Grace Most Rev. Stanislaus Fernandes, S.J., from the pastoral care of the Archdiocese of Gandhinagar, according to Canon Law Can. 401 § 1, and has appointed His Lordship Rt. Rev. Thomas Ignatius Macwan, till now Bishop of Ahmedabad, as the new Archbishop of Gandhinagar.
Bishop Macwan is also appointed as Apostolic Administrator sedevacante of the Diocese of Ahmedabad.
This provision was made public in Rome on Friday, 12th June, 2015, Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, at noon local time, corresponding to 15:30 hours, Indian Standard Time.
His Grace, Most Rev. Thomas Ignatius Macwan was born at Khandhli village, Near Anand, Diocese of Ahmedabad, on 14th October, 1952. He did his seminary studies at St. Charles’ Seminary, Nagpur, both for Philosophy and Theology for the Diocese of Ahmedabad, and received the Priestly Ordination on 9th April, 1988. From 1990 to 1992, he did his Licentiate in Spirituality at the Angelicum University, Rome.
He was elected Bishop of Ahmedabad on 11th November, 2002 and received the Episcopal Ordination on 11th January, 2003. Presently he is the Chairman of the Commission for Catechetics of the CCBI and Member Bishop of the Labour Commission of the CBCI. He is fluent in English, Gujarati and Hindi languages.
